Hans Kaufmann pressed a hand to his chest as he pursued that gleaming gold thread linking him to his Guardian magic. He followed it like a trail leading him to greatness; to glory and power.

Those fools who blindly protected the Torrent knew nothing. If Hans wasn’t meant to rebel, then why did he still possess this power? This much magic was granted to him for a reason, and if he was making the wrong choice, it would have withdrawn. Just like the pockets had.

But no, this was fate. Hans was only following the path put before him.

Darkness clouded his form, but the gold light still shone brightly, lighting the way like a beacon.

Desperate times called for desperate measures. Katherine wouldn’t like it, but Alexei had been saying for years they needed to recruit fresh Guardians. The knowledge that Amanda Newport possessed Guardian magic, and now this new blonde Guardian was on their radar, meant that Hans had to resort to more-drastic methods of acquiring power.

Hans followed his magic until it led him to a tidy two-story home. The streets were lit by a single, faded lamp, and the neighborhood was so quiet that his own breathing blared in his ears.

This was it. No turning back now.

Hans sent his gold power into the air. It ignited like fireworks, but he wasn’t worried; he already knew this particular spell was only visible to those with Guardian magic. And, assuming his energy had correctly found his target, she would see it. She would come looking.

He only had to wait a few minutes before the back door opened and a girl about ten years old emerged, dressed in a pink nightgown and rubbing sleepily at her eyes. She stared, wide-eyed, at the gold light bursting in the sky, her face full of awe.

Hans straightened with pride. Of course, she should be awestruck by this power; who wouldn’t be?

“You like it?” he asked.

The girl froze, her eyes finally snapping to him as if just realizing he was there.

Hans lifted his hands in a gesture of peace. “I mean you no harm. I have magic just like you. If you like, I can show you how to use it.”

The girl eyed him warily. “Who are you?”

“I’m called a Guardian. Do you know what that is?”

Slowly, the girl shook her head, and Hans silently cursed the fools who had raised her in ignorance. How could they not tell her what she was? What immense power she possessed?

“Come with me, and I can train you,” Hans said, inching closer to her. To his relief, she didn’t back away from him. “I can show you what you are capable of.”

The girl’s brows knitted together. She cast a glance over her shoulder to the back door, which stood open. “But…my family.”

“They don’t know you,” Hans said. “Not the real you. You hide it from them, don’t you?”

The girl pressed her lips together but didn’t deny it.
